SCP
From Ubiquity Web Hosting Wiki
SCP delivers an FTP connection over SSH in a slower but more encrypted fashion. SCP can be accessed using any client that supports it. The instructions below are for connecting to SCP using WinSCP - our recommended client software for doing this.
cPanel Clients
All clients that have signed up after 10/1/2008 can follow the following instructions to access their account using SFTP Step 1: Generate your key
- First, download WinSCP and Puttygen.exe if you do not already have them, you'll need them both
- Open Puttygen.exe, click Generate, and move your mouse around the grey box like it asks you to
- Click Save public Key and Save private Key - save both someplace safe and where you'll remember to find them
- Copy the data in the top of the Puttygen window to the clipboard or leave the window open - you'll need it soon.
Step 2: Install your key
- Login to your cPanel account, and click on the black Shell/SSH icon towards the middle of the page under Security
- Choose the Manage SSH Keys button
- Choose Import SSH Key icon at the top of the page
- Type in a name for your key in the first text box. You can name it whatever you like. Skip the second text box for your Private Key.
- In the 3rd text box, paste in your Public Key that you copied or left open from Step 1 and click Import
- Now click the Return to SSH Manager link, and you should see your key. Click the Manage Authorization link next to it, and click Authorize
Step 3: Connect to the server
- Open WinSCP (downloaded in the first step).
- On the main screen, enter the server IP address or your domain name under Host name
- Change the Port number from 22 to 8999
- Enter in your cPanel username (NOT the name of your key!)
- Don't enter in a Password (leave it blank)
- Under Private key file - click the ... to find your private key file from the previous section
- Click Login
- If you get an error saying 'the server refused our key!', review the previous steps, something wasn't done right
- If you get an error saying your account does not have access to SSH, please contact our support so we can correct this for you
