Can't access email using an email client

  • If you can't connect to Email, you will get one of two varieties of error: Connection Failure or Authentication Failure
    • Connection Failure
      • Make sure you are not behind a firewall or on a wireless network that may block ports commonly used for POP3/IMAP/webmail
      • Make sure you typed in the server address correctly. If you have recently made changes to DNS, you may need to use the server's IP as the host name
      • More information on establishing an email connection can be found in Accessing Email / Configuring Email Clients
    • Authentication Failure
      • Make sure you typed in the correct email account in as the user, and the correct password
      • If it continues not to work, login to your control panel and reset the password for this email account - and try again

Emails aren't being delivered

It's worth noting that if emails aren't getting through to your users, it's almost always an issue of it not being received, rather than it not being sent. There are potentially hundreds of reasons that this could happen, but just a few account for most scenarios.

Diagnosis

  • First, look for a bounce-back message at the FROM email address. It should come with a Delivery Status Notification message.
  • Match the message up on the Delivery Status Notification page to find an explanation of the issue. If you don't see an obvious fix, provide the DSN message to our support team.

Common Resolutions

  • Your domain name or IP address may have become blacklisted.
    • This happens easier than most people think, especially if your website sends out any emails at all.
    • The best course of action is contact the provider on the receiving end, or any database you may be listed in.
  • Reverse DNS is not configured on your domain's IP address.
    • rDNS is commonly used to filter out spam. We'll want to make sure it's set on your IP, and if it's a dedicated IP - that the entry includes your domain name.
    • A matching A record and PTR record should be set.
