Choosing a phpFox hosting environment
From Ubiquity Web Hosting Wiki
This page should serve as a complete guide on selecting hosting for your phpFox website as it grows.
Members per Server
These numbers can be stretched to a degree and are definitely subjective. However, stretched too far beyond this numbers, we've found that performance starts to noticeably suffer.
- Shared web hosting is really only constrained by disk/bw.. is usually outgrown by 1500-2000 phpFox members
- Virtual private servers may or may not increase performance over shared web hosting, and are only recommended to increase stability
- Celeron dedicated servers can generally handle 4000-6000 total phpFox members
- Single Xeon dedicated servers can generally handle 15,000-30,000 phpFox members
- Dual Xeon dedicated servers can generally handle 40,000-60,000 phpFox members with enough RAM
- This is extremely subjective and depends on...
- Version of phpFox
- Custom mods that are installed
- Settings used in phpFox (ie. whether users are required to log in first to browse)
- General behavior of members (depending on the nature of the website; phpFox sites are used differently by users)
Music Module and Video Modules
The phpFox music module will work in any of our web hosting environments, including basic shared hosting. No adjustments should be required to make this happen.
The phpFox video module should work on any of our managed dedicated servers out of the box (using FFMpeg, mPlayer, and all of the other long list of requirements for this component).
Growing past one server
Successful phpFox sites will eventually outgrow a single dedicated server. As this happens, we will be able to scale additional servers outwards for you - first adding an external database server, then adding additional web servers using software-based load balancing. Ubiquity's technical team has grown very accustomed to adapting the expanding needs of a successful phpFox website and can answer any questions that this may raise.
